BEST THINGS TO DO IN CANTERBURY
Christchurch activities and attractions
International Antarctic Centre
The International Antarctic Centre sits across the street from Christchurch International Airport. This is a family-friendly activity where you can experience a simulation of the harsh Antarctic climate, learn about the icy continent, and meet the centre’s cutest residents—the kororā (or Little Blue Penguins). The Hagglund Ride allows visitors to experience what it’s like to ride in an all-terrain amphibious Antarctic vehicle. At the same time, the 4D Extreme Theatre provides a simulated sail with close-ups of wilderness and breath-taking scenery, making you feel like you’re really on the ice.
Botanic Gardens
At the heart of Christchurch city centre, you will find the Botanic Gardens, a place of ever-changing beauty. A visit to this garden and you will be certain as to why Christchurch is known as the Garden City of New Zealand. The Botanic Gardens feature one of New Zealand’s finest collections of exotic and native plants, showcasing flora and fauna to all its visitors.
Punting on the Avon
Punting on the Avon River is an experience no one should ever miss, whether in the summer or winter. Revel in the urban views as your experienced guide dressed in traditional Edwardian attire rows you quietly along the water past weeping willows, woods, and the leafy banks of North Hagley Park alongside the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. Then, take a Punt ride from Worcester Street Bridge through to Christchurch’s central city to see the city’s ongoing changes.
Show Day Christchurch
Christchurch Show Day is held annually on the second Friday following the first Tuesday in November and shouldn’t be missed. It is a Canterbury social highlight featuring world-class horse racing in NZ, fashion, food, and entertainment over three spectacular days as the region celebrates all that is wonderful about spring in Christchurch. Various options will be available this week, including Australasia’s most prominent horse racing day.
Our luxury accommodation in Christchurch is located in the city’s heart, opposite the iconic Hagley Park. It is easily accessible to all the above Christchurch activities and scenic adventures that await you.
Akaroa
Swim with dolphins
Swimming with dolphins is one of the best things to do in Canterbury, and Akaroa is one of the safest places to do so. They have a resident pod of dusky dolphins that can number in the hundreds. Nothing beats seeing animals in their natural habitat, and dolphins are the friendliest of creatures.
The Giants House
A historic Akaroa house with original artworks, sculptures, mosaics, and terraced gardens. Romantic, secluded, and peaceful, but only a few minutes’ walk from Akaroa’s town centre. You will be pampered and stimulated at The Giant’s House in surroundings that will uplift your soul!
Hanmer Springs activities
Hanmer Springs
Hanmer Springs is a popular destination for both locals and tourists. This small township is easily accessible, and while it is suitable for a day trip, we recommend spending much more time there. So, whether you’re a solo traveller, a couple looking for a romantic getaway, a group of friends, or a family, there’s plenty to do in Hanmer Springs!
Thermal Pools and Spa
Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, located only 90 minutes from Christchurch, is a large thermal complex in an alpine environment with extensive native gardens. The facility includes thermal minerals, sulphur, freshwater pools, and a large children’s activity area.
Jet Boat
Taste some adrenaline in the spectacular Waiau River Canyon; a Hanmer Springs Jet Boat ride takes you through narrow gorges, over rapids, and through braided shallows. In this action-packed experience, you can travel across just centimetres of water or rotate through a 360-degree spin—a must-do activity for thrill seekers and families alike.
Hanmer Forest
The best walking and mountain bike trails are found in Hanmer Forest. You can stay at the campsite for an adventurous stay, or you can check out our Hanmer Springs Retreat. The retreat is just minutes away from the famous Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa, beautiful forest walks, and mountain bike tracks, and is only a short drive from Mt Lyford Ski Area and other Hanmer Springs activities.
Arthur’s Pass
Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall
Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall in Arthur’s Pass is a 131-metre waterfall that falls in the incredible Arthur’s Pass National Park. After a short hike through native forest and boardwalk paths, visitors will reach a viewing platform with fantastic views and photo opportunities of this spectacular towering waterfall.
Avalanche Peak Route
If you’re an experienced hiker with limited time, this challenging six- to eight-hour walk to the top of Avalanche Peak is a great choice. It’s the only peak in the park with a poled path to the summit, making the navigation aspect relatively simple, even if the rest of the hike isn’t.
Otira Viaduct Lookout
See the long, winding viaduct amongst mountains, where a pleasant kea parrot will almost certainly join you. There are numerous places to pull over and admire the views on Arthur’s Pass, but few are as magnificent as the view of Otira Viaduct. This massive bridge is 440 metres (1,457 feet) long and is the only reason driving Arthur’s Pass is possible.
SOME EXTRA BONUSES
A study conducted by the WORLD TRAVEL & TOURISM COUNCIL reveals that travelling contributes significantly to mental rejuvenation. And wouldn’t it be more relaxing to finish your vacation at a spa or sauna? So, join us at our lovely accommodation located in both Christchurch and Hanmer springs. We and some scenic activities are eagerly waiting to host you on your beautiful trip to Canterbury.
