Visit the Craters of the Moon and you’ll see evidence of the lake’s fiery birth in the geysers, steaming craters and boiling mud pools.
This geothermical complex is situated a few kilometers north of town and is a great add-on to your visit to the Huka Falls. There is an admission fee (approx. $10 NZD) and it will give you access to the park and its walkway. The walk is some 3 kilometers and takes you across a field with boiling mud and steaming vents.
The walkway is super easy and generally flat, optionally you can add the higher terrace overlooking the complex. This trail is a little steep but nothing very strenuous.
